The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has officially opened the 2024 EEO-1 Component 1 data collection portal. Employers must submit their reports by Tuesday, June 24, 2025. This year’s reporting cycle introduces several important changes that employers should be aware of to ensure compliance.
What is the EEO-1 Component 1 Report?
The EEO-1 Component 1 report is an annual submission required by the EEOC that collects workforce demographic data from certain employers. Specifically, it gathers information on employees’ job categories, race or ethnicity, and sex. This data helps the EEOC enforce federal anti-discrimination laws and monitor employment practices.
Who is Required to File?
The following entities are mandated to file the EEO-1 Component 1 report:
- Private employers with 100 or more employees during a selected pay period in the fourth quarter of 2024.
- Federal contractors and first-tier subcontractors with 50 or more employees AND a contract of at least $50,000, or who serve as a depository of government funds or as a financial institution that is an issuing and paying agent for U.S. savings bonds and savings notes.
Employers must select a workforce snapshot period, a pay period between October 1 and December 31, 2024, to report their data.
What’s New?
Several significant updates have been made to the 2024 EEO-1 Component 1 reporting process:
- Shortened Reporting Period
The EEOC has implemented a shorter collection window for the 2024 reporting cycle. The portal opened on May 20, 2025, and will close on June 24, 2025. No extensions will be granted beyond this deadline, emphasizing the importance of timely submission.
- Electronic-Only Communications
All communications regarding the EEO-1 Component 1 data collection will be conducted electronically. The EEOC will no longer send notifications via postal mail. Employers should ensure their contact information is up to date in the EEO-1 Component 1 Online Filing System (OFS).
- Binary Sex Reporting Requirement
In alignment with recent federal directives, the EEOC has updated its reporting requirements to include only binary sex options (male and female) for employee counts. The option to report non-binary employees separately has been removed.
- Title VII Compliance Reminder
EEOC Acting Chair Andrea Lucas emphasized that while collecting and reporting demographic data, employers must not use this information to make employment decisions based on race, sex, or other protected characteristics. Such actions would violate Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
